i want to show you how our living room is coming along.
you may remember that we moved last month and are currently renting.
we are slowly getting settled and figuring out how to live in a new space.
here's a picture of the living room from before we moved in.
the wood paneling is now painted faded burlap {Olympic premium paint} & trim painted white.
i finally got all the cabinets painted & aj installed them.
this was a happy, happy day.
i was able to unpack the last of the boxes {okay i actually have a couple more, but i'm currently ignoring them} and that felt so good.
these cabinets are giving us some much needed storage underneath as well as housing the electrical components for the tv.
so currently our furniture situation is pretty sad.
we have one lonely couch & a coffee table.
i have been scouring thrift stores for some really fun/funky chairs, but haven't found the perfect thing yet.
i've also been looking online at target, overstock, wal-mart, craig's list, etc.
i'm trying not to spend too much money, but i would like to find some chairs that will last us for a long time.
the couch is a pottery barn slipcovered sofa that i scored off craig's list. woo to the hoo.
also i need to figure out what to do with that big expanse of wall to the left of the cabs.
i don't want to do anything too busy because the shelves are already really busy.
speaking of the shelves....they probably will not remain this way for long.
i really didn't know what to do with them.
right now i feel like they look a little knick-knacky.
here are some close ups.... and by the way this is basically every decorative item i own, all shoved up on these shelves.
those 3 pictures on the bottom shelf of this last picture are each of my 3 boys at 6 months wearing the same overalls. :)
so i'm thinking i want to get some big baskets to disperse throughout to streamline it a bit and I may add in some more books.
and a close up of the mantel. . .
so far i am really happy with this room.
it's definitely a work in progress.
list of to-do's for this room:
1. get some dad-gum curtains
2. paint the wardrobe {not seen, it's behind the couch along the back wall}
3. find chairs
4. find end table
5. put wall art up
6. put up coat hooks by the door
7. get a trunk to coral the boys' shoes
8. get knobs for the cabinet doors
9. update photos
10. whatever else i think of along the way. :)

What an amazing difference those cabinets (and paint) make in your room!! I can hardly believe it is the same space.
ReplyDeleteA huge topographical map in muted colors would look clean and unique on your big wall. Check out http://www.historicmapsrestored.com/ for some good deals.
ReplyDeleteHave you thought about a wall decal quote or bible verse? You can customize the saying/verse and fonts and they can look really neat on a wall.
ReplyDeleteAmazeballs!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, those bookshelves are FABULOUS!
ReplyDeleteI think the room looks fab. If you are not happy with the stuff on the shelves, just pick a few select things and rotate the rest in through out the year.
ReplyDeleteIt's looking great! Good choice of colors!
ReplyDeleteYour house just looks cuter and cuter every day
ReplyDeleteIt looks great Sara!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay...just showed it to Dasun and first he said, "wow", then a quick pause, and then he said, "they got a new tv." What?! I was too busy looking at your new shelves and how you decorated them and how good everything looks to even see that. Men and women truly are different creatures. ha!!!
ReplyDeleteit is looking so great... very cozy!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is looking really good! Those shelves really jazz the space up. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! Maybe I missed it in another post, but what happened to your old furniture? I'm pretty sure you had living room furniture in your old house!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so good! I think a basket or two is a great idea to hide a few of Sawyer's toys. I have two baskets (from Target on sale) that are the same height as my bookshelf shelves, so they completely hide the kids puzzles and games that they are allowed to have in the living room. So what color will you paint the wardrobe? I got my funky velour chair for Noah's room at Weir's. Do you have that there? Christian furniture store (they play hymns) and filled to the brim. A lot to sift thru but some great deals!!
ReplyDeleteWow... the paint and shelves totally transformed that room! Love it. I like the idea of a huge map for the wall.
ReplyDeleteI love your shelves! And I know what you mean about waiting to find the perfect thing. I love searching for just the right thing. Especially if its something I can up-cycle to fit the room just right!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new space and thanks for sharing pics!
joshandlaura....yes we had a couch & love seat. we sold the love seat on craig's list and the couch is in the front room which i'm currently not sure what to do with. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge difference! It looks great! I agree that more books would look great on the shelves. Check the thrift stores- ours has books for 10 cents! It's awesome for decorative items.
ReplyDeleteHow difficult was it to paint the wood paneling. It looks terrific and I was planning on doing the same thing in my home. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteIt's really not difficult. But our paneling didn't have very deep grooves. So that could make a difference. We primed first and then did 2 coats of paint on top. Just used a roller. :) good luck!
ReplyDeleteCould you please tell me if you had to sand the paneling before painting it? Our living room in our new home has similar wood paneling, and I'm afraid the paint won't stick to it without sanding, which will be a LOT of work to do..
ReplyDeleteHi Amber!
DeleteNo, we did not sand them, but we did prime them. I would use kilz primer, then paint with a good quality paint. Hope that helps. :)
