guest post ~ kira @ Kissing the Joy as it Flies

Hi! My name is Kira and I'm coming to you live (not really) from my little blog,
Kissing the Joy as it Flies.

Sara was very sweet to invite me to visit with ya'll today, so allow me to introduce myself. I'm a somewhat facetious mom of four boybarians, ages 9, 7, 4, and 2 (phew!) and I've been blogging about nothing in particular for about 3-1/2 years now. My blog mostly focuses on our everyday life and the craziness that entails, but I sometimes share a geeky tip, a project I'm working on, or my latest adventure in homemaking. Don't get your hopes up though... mostly I just share the embarrassing stuff that happens to us on 'Fess Up Friday.

Photobucket

'Fessing Up is very therapeutic, so if you ever want to give it a go, come join me on a Friday.

Today I'm here for a very special reason.

Sara had her baby!

A baby girl even.

I admit that I was hoping Sara would stay on my 'Mom of All Boys' team, because I need all the support I can get, but I'm very happy for her. It's nice to know that some people out there are capable of producing female offspring, because if it was up to me we'd be in trouble.

In honor of the fact that Sara is having a GIRL, I thought this might be a fun time to celebrate the noisy, dirty, rowdy, adventurous, entertaining and often mystifying wonder that is a BOY.

Plus, that's all I know about.
.
.
.
Boys are wonderful because they keep life spicy.
You never know what you may find lurking around the house.

Sometimes it's a sandwich baggie containing a live slug behind the couch.

Sometimes,
it's entire rolls of scotch tape used  to keep 'claws' on on little hands.

Sometimes,

it's Lego-Men in the garbage disposal

or maybe a playmobile guy dangling precariously from a crevice in the fireplace.

Boys are also curious and adventuresome,

which means that sometimes they do odd things.

Such as giving their baby brothers a sharpie tattoo on the face

or pulling four packages of baby wipes out of the container

or trying out the toilet, fully clothed, to see if it can double as a hot tub.

In the moment, these little episodes can seem like a bigger deal than they are, but later you appreciate the fact that they make for a good story at MOPS.

Boys also like sports

and hunting

and collecting weapons

Boys can get pretty creative when they play a  round of dress up

but mostly, they just play so hard they wear holes right through their shoes.

When they get older, they become very helpful with icky jobs

such as taking out the garbage

and exterminating spiders.

Plus, they love their mommies.

Sometimes, boys give you a glimpse of who they'll be in the future,

like when they flex their muscles

or sport a mustache

or run too fast and gravity makes their face droop.

And sometimes,

they are just sweet little babies you wish could stay this size forever.

Everyone has heard the saying that a boy is 'Noise with Dirt on It'

to which I say,

True 'dat!

BUT,

boys are also sweet

and cuddly

and protective of their younger siblings.

In short,

boys are pretty special.

And I think little Ruby is incredibly blessed to have these three as her big brothers.

She is going to be so treasured and protected, it will be a sight to behold.

I am so so so happy for you!

guest post * sara of a life less ordinary

today we have a guest post from my sweet friend, sara who blogs at a life less ordinary
she also has an amazing stationary business where i buy my christmas cards & birth announcement designs.
she is super creative & talented...you need to check out her shop. :)
we are actually online friends. . . we "met" when i ordered christmas cards from her, years ago.
that was when i had an etsy shop and we hit it off and bought things back and forth from each other.
i love reading her blog and keeping up with her through twitter.
i asked her if she would guest post for me and she kindly said yes.
now i will quit rambling and give the floor over to her. :)

New Shoes

Becoming a parent gave me this glimpse into the heart of God and helped me to understand how he feels about me better than I did before. I know that I'll never understand completely how he feels, but I had a little reminder today.

Jack's needed new shoes for, um, let's just say a while. I've pushed it as far as I possibly could and I'm not sure why. Maybe because size 9 looks HUGE and I can't believe my baby needs that size. Maybe because I couldn't find anything that I really liked.

We were down to one pair of shoes that fit and then, they fit only without socks on (they're those sandal/tennis shoe mix shoes . . . I call them all terrain shoes). They've been awesome for the summer, but they're starting to get tight. And stinky. Really, really stinky. His tennis shoes kind of fit, but they're tight, for sure. His flip flops leave sores on his feet. He had a pair of sandals at the beginning of the summer, but he had outgrown them by July.

That said, I finally broke down and ordered him two new pair of shoes last week. They're two pair of exactly the same shoe, in different colors. They were on sale at The Children's Place and I had a 20% off coupon. Perfect. While I was shopping online, I picked up a couple pair of pants that were on sale (which I have to return because I accidentally ordered them in 3T and he's well into 4T) and a shirt.

Everything arrived today and when Kelsey (our babysitter) left this afternoon, Kyle called Jack over to open the box with him. He said, "This stuff for baby brother?" And we told him, no, that it was stuff for him. His eyes lit up.

"Yay! Yay!" he kept saying over and over with his arm up in the air. This is his newest way to show his excitement. His eyes were wide as we pulled out the shoes, pants and shirt. My two-year-old was jumping up and down and literally ooo-ing and ahh-ing over the clothes we had purchased for him. I had no idea he'd be this excited. He immediately sat down and started trying to put his shoes on. At which point I patted myself on the back for buying shoes with velcro. One less thing we have to do for him when trying to get out the door . . .

He wore those shoes all over and kept saying, "I like them! I like them!" He walked out onto the deck and just stared down at his shoes as he walked around for a little while. After we went inside, he started pulling his shirt on over his head. He got a little stuck, but had a huge smile on his face the whole time. This whole thing took me by surprise. I just thought I had bought him some necessities and that he'd barely notice that we were strapping something new to his feet.

I had no clue he'd react this way. But I was so, so happy. I loved seeing the look on his face when he saw these things. I loved the excitement in his eyes over the gifts we had given him.

I think that's how God feels when he watches us receive the good gifts he gives us. I think he beams when he sees our excitement.

Later, when I was snuggling with him at naptime, Jack said, "Thank you for the new shoes, Mama."

"You're welcome," I responded. I laid there next to him with tears in my eyes thinking about how much I loved that kid.

After I left his room, I sat on my bed for a while and just thanked God for all of the good gifts he's given me. And I think God was sitting there with me thinking about how much he loves this kid.

showered with love

a few weeks ago, our sweet friends blessed us with a couple's shower.
the invitation said, "sugar and sweets and all things PINK!"

can i tell you how excited i was for a pink baby shower? sooooo excited.
and it was wonderful and girly and pink.

they planned so many extra details to make it special for me.
i truly have the most amazing friends.

everyone had to wear pink, even the guys.
if you know my husband, you know this was asking a lot.
he did it for me, because he loves me and because he didn't have a choice. :)

everything was decorated with red and pink.
perfect for a little girl named ruby.

they made me a little book of wishes for the baby.
some were sweet and meaningful and others were funny.
i look forward to reading through them when i'm up at night with ruby.

we had such a fun night.
it was great to hang out with some really good friends and celebrate this gift God is giving us.

and this is what grown men do when they attend a baby shower.
