hey y'all.
it's been a crazy week around here.
our big boys had basketball camp at jbu so our "schedule" was all upside down.
finley went for a half day and avery went all day...getting home about 9 every night.
i woke up on monday and thought it was friday. ha.
no bueno.
on wednesday, i woke up and said "it's the last day of basketball camp."
it ended thursday.
yeah...so it's been a weird, long week.
i am so so happy that my boys got to go...but i am also happy to chill out a little bit. ;)
the great thing was that they went with 6 other providence friends so the mamas were able to carpool these little guys to get them to and fro all week.
they had a great week and loved it so much.
at the end of avery's camp they had an awards ceremony.
avery won the "golden eagle award" {for good heart and attitude all week} out of his entire age group.
so, so special and a really big deal.
they said it was all the awards combined and it is something that all the coaches voted on.
we are so very proud of our boy.
if he could win any award, that is what we would want.
he also won a gatorade shot of the day award that day so it was a pretty good day for avery. :)
so thankful that God blessed my boy in that way.
love these sweet providence boys!

running tips from a non-athlete
several people have asked me how i got started running, so i thought i'd give my two cents and some tips.
do you think running looks like torture?
do you dry heave and have severe side pains when you try to run?
do you have no time to run?
do you have no motivation to run?
are you uncoordinated and generally un-athletic?
perfect.
you are my people.
these tips are for you. :)
okay so i never intended to be a runner and honestly i am pretty much a fair weather friend of running.
i am going to try my darndest to stick with it over the winter months {i'll keep you updated on that.}
thank goodness for the treadmill.
running never appealed to me because:
1. it just wasn't on my radar
2. whenever i'd see people running they didn't look like they were particularly enjoying themselves.
welp...i married a runner.
only, he wasn't a runner when we got married but he is a natural athlete.
he's always been involved in sports so anything athletic comes pretty easily to him.
again, the opposite of me.
five or six years ago he started running and has run his fair share of half marathons.
he loves it.
he's diligent.
he reads runner's world for fun.
little by little he chipped away at me {in a very non-pressury way} and started convincing me that i could run and enjoy it.
i started running a few years ago and have been pretty off and on with it . . . due largely in part to the fact that i got pregnant and had a baby and see that as 100% excuse to do nothing athletic of any kind for 2 years.
can i get a witness?
this summer i started running again and am actually {cue the angel chorus} enjoying it.
so here are my tips for all you, that-looks-like-zero-fun-but-i-really-need-to-get-in-shape, people like me:
Tip #1: in the words of nike, just do it.
seriously.
put on your running shoes.
put on some sort of running clothes or pajamas or whatever and go run.
put one foot in front of the other and just make yourself do it.
even if you are so sloooowww.
you will at least feel the sense of accomplishment of running.
some people find it helps to run for two minutes, walk one, run two, etc.
for me, i do better if i don't stop running until i'm done.
either way, just get out there and run.
anyone can run, it takes no special skills.
it does take decent knees so if your knees are crap, you may want to try biking. just a thought.
Tip #2: set small goals.
start with half a mile.
then aim for one mile, non-stop running.
then one and half, then two.
if you can work your way up to three, you're ready for a 5K.
how cool is that?!
Tip #3: run outside if at all possible.
sometimes, logistically i have to run on our treadmill in the garage.
and it is hard.
but i do it because i want to stay in shape and not lose momentum.
and i have to push with every ounce of my perseverance to run one mile.
when i run outside, i can run three miles and actually enjoy it.
i can distract myself with looking at houses, trees, the sunrise, the beautiful sky, etc.
i get up early and run before AJ leaves for work.
it's darkish still so i carry pepper spray and my phone.
but the breeze on my face and fresh air feel so good and make it so much easier.
Tip #4: have lots of kids so that you never get alone time and therefore crave every minute of peace and quiet you can get. :)
Tip #5: get a cheerleader or two.
this is a huge one.
for me, it's AJ.
he's my biggest fan and he supports me like crazy.
he helps me get up in the morning and helps me make a plan for how far and where i'm going to run.
another option: get running partners.
this would be highly motivational and keep you accountable.
i know many people who credit their running to having running buddies.
i have a crazy schedule & no running friends close, so i run alone, but you may have friends who are available and want to run with you...take advantage of that!
Tip #6: make a plan
halhigdon.com is a great site to customize a running plan for your personal goals.
it's great for people like me who have no idea what they're doing.
thumbs up, hal higdon. i'm a fan.
also figure out what days of the week you can run and try to stick with that and have your people {running partners or personal cheerleader} keep you accountable.
if you miss a day, figure out a way to make up for it so that you don't lose momentum.
ideally i would run 3-4 times a week.
right now, i run twice a week and that works for me.
eventually i'd like to run more, but you know, i've got little ones so i'm giving myself some grace.
Tip #7: sign up for a race
this is huge.
you have a goal.
you want to be ready for that race so you don't look like an idiot in front of your friends.
sign up for the race. pay the race fee.
get a plan for that race {again halhigdon.com is a good resource or just google running plans} and do what the plan says so that you can work up to it.
a race is so fun that you will want to do another one.
there's so much adrenaline and sense of accomplishment.
seriously this is my most important tip.
sign. up. for. a. race.
Tip #8: see results.
okay so this comes once you actually start running but this is a huge motivator for me to keep at it.
two major results for me, i'm in better shape and i've lost weight.
being in better shape = i can run farther and longer and feel good doing it.
that's huge motivation to not stop because i don't want to lose that stamina.
and obviously, losing those stubborn pounds that wanted to hang on for dear life after having four babies is motivation like crazy.
i'd rather not get those bad boys back thankyouverymuch.
my clothes fit better and obviously i feel better about myself.
{in an effort of full disclosure i would also like to say that i quit eating like i was pregnant or nursing so that probably helped too. ;)}
okay peeps, i've shared my pearls of running wisdom.
do y'all have anything to add? any running tips to share? any questions?
let's discuss in the comments.....
Monday, October 8, 2012
so i guess i'm a runner now.
no big deal.
you know, AJ is a running super stud.
he ran track in high school and has ran half marathons for the last five or six years.
i never, ever, thought i would like running.
i've run one 5K before and quit promptly after the race was over.
i've run here and there over the last two years but not much.
plus i was pregnant for a good portion of that time and we all know that i don't do a stitch of exercise when i'm preggers.
i finally started running again towards the end of this summer.
and again, it pretty much felt like torture.
i prayed every time i ran that one day i would love it.
well, i don't think i'm quite to love yet, but ohmyword, i am actually enjoying it.
and that, dear friends, is a miracle.
seriously. wonders never cease.
i am the least athletic girl you will meet.
and somehow, by the grace of God and a really encouraging husband, i am a runner {a really slow runner, but a runner nonetheless :)}.
like, i just ran a race this weekend and i'm planning to run again this week.
and i'm looking forward to it.
i can hardly believe it myself.
i knew that i needed to sign up for a race to get myself motivated to start running again.
i signed up for One Heart for Justice race that was on saturday. {A partnership between titus task, ezekiel rain and other local organizations for Jesus' justice in the areas of adoption and human trafficking}.
and, of course, after weeks of running in 65 degree weather, it was low 40's, feels like 30's.
with a little sleet mixed in for fun.
mercy.
you know, i am not a cold weather girl but i was so excited for this race that i was alright.
my sweet boys were the best cheerleaders.
they yelled for me and kept saying, "good job mommy!"
they were so excited for me.
love them.
and my sweet husband.
he is amazing.
do you see he's videoing with one phone & taking pics with another?
he is seriously so encouraging.
he made such a big deal about this race and made me feel so special.
sometimes i can't believe he's mine.
so thankful.
after my race we had about an hour until AJ & Avery's one mile fun run.
we went into a sweet little coffee shop/bookstore to warm up with hot chocolate and coffee.
since it was so cold, ruby stayed home with grandma while grandpa came and braved the cold with us {and took lots of pictures...thank you! }
we were able to watch the half marathoners run by while we warmed up.
very fun. :)
avery was super pumped to run his race.
he pushed hard and finished with an 8.39 minute mile and got 2nd in his age group.
even though it was a chilly morning, we had a great time and loved running for such a good cause.
i'm already looking forward to my next race..... in warmer weather. ;)
p.s. thank you all for your sweet & encouraging words!

instafriday, summer edition
happy june 1st, friends!!
isn't june such a happy month? love it.
we're getting in the summer swing of things around here.
i'm sleeping in a bit . . . which means 6:30 instead of 5:30, don't get excited.
the house is a complete wreck.
but we're happy and we're together.
trying to focus on what matters and not the fact that you can't walk through the kitchen without getting weirdo crumbles on the bottom of your feet.
there's a bit of adjustment for the boys to get used to so much free time.
we have some school attitudey detox stuff to work through...but we'll get there. ;)
can you stand the cuteness?
tutu swim suits are the most brilliant invention ever.
adorbs.

avery made his own battleship game and we've played it several times.
his creativity continues to amaze me.

adorbs.
just three kids on a boat sailing the high seas.
no big deal.
sometimes i get a bit overwhelmed being one on five. {five kiddos when i have meliyah}
five that are nine years old and younger.
we had to get out yesterday, so i took our motley crew to chic-fil-a for lunch.
thank Jesus, they all did wonderful.
and ruby, sweet, teething, high-maintenance ruby was happy in the high chair the entire time.
she entertained herself and was happy and content.
that was a sweet, much-needed gift.
it did a lot for my spirits.
and so did my large sweet tea.
and the refill that lasted me all afternoon.
and got me through a rousing game of pictureka.
;)
we ended our night with a two hour baseball game.
avery's team won. :)
we got home late and the kids went to bed way after bed time.
but don't worry, they woke up at the same crack of dawn time that they usually do. :))
link up your weekly cell phone pics with me over at jeannett's!

ballers
this winter our boys have been playing basketball for the first time.
they are playing upwards basketball and they are loving it.
practices are monday and tuesday and games are on saturdays.
thankfully, AJ takes them to their practices so i only have to entertain little ones at the games on saturdays.
i sure do love it when they play indoor sports.
i'm such a wimp with cold weather.
i've enjoyed going to their games and watching them improve.
sawyer loves it too.
AJ's parents came this weekend to watch the games.
his dad took a whole slew of great pics for us.
these are straight out of his camera . . . no editing. love that.
i love that they start every game with prayer.
AJ coaches avery's team.
it's fun to see him coach again.....just for a little bit. ;)
i love to see him work with our boys on their skills.
avery has improved so much this year.
he practices dribbling every day after school.
he hustles down the court every time.
if i could chose a sport for my boys, this would definitely be my fave.
i sure do like being a boy mom. :) Pin It

weekend wrap up
it was so nice to have a weekend at home.
on friday, aj got tickets to a naturals' baseball game.
it was a fun family outing. . . mostly.
the boys were very excited.
sawyer lasted for about 4 minutes.
then we took a little trip to the concession stand to get cotton candy & sprite.
that bought us about 10 more minutes with sawyer.
he just wasn't in any mood to be contained.
so sawyer and i walked around while aj and the big boys watched the game.
we walked until my swollen feet could take it no longer.
he went under the misters a few times.
he played on the playground for a few minutes.
but mostly he wanted to go wave at all of the costumed people walking around...aka, the koolaide man, the cheeto tiger, a big walking subway sandwich {sawyer was not a fan}, strike {the naturals' mascot}, a cardinal guy, etc.
he got a baseball signed and also met ronald donald who was actually really creepy if you ask me.
all in all, it was a good family night.
tiring, but fun.
and there are no photos of me because in every photo i either look fat or like i have a lazy eye or a double chin.
delete. :)
on saturday we went for donuts and then drove around talking while the boys watched a movie in the back. :)
aj humored me and stopped at some yard sales.
i bought 3 glue guns for a quarter each.
at lunch time my mom, niece, nephew & little sister came over to eat & swim.
it was a really fun afternoon.
i mostly laid on a raft while children & my husband splashed around me. :)
later that afternoon we worked on moving sawyer into the big boys' room.
now they are all 3 sharing a room.
we only have 3 bedrooms and baby sister just has to have her own girly nursery.
saturday night we went out to eat mexican with my dad, step mom, uncle & little sister for father's day.
after we got the boys in bed that night, aj and i watched you again.
it was so good!
it was funny and very clean, which is amazing and makes me happy.
on sunday/father's day we spent the day with just our little family of five.
i love any chance to celebrate my aj.
he is the rock star of this family, for real.
we are all enamored with him. :)
oh man i love those four boys!!

around here lately
the boys are playing baseball.
aren't they so adorable in their uniforms?
on wednesday avery finally lost one of his top front teeth.
that thing has been loose for over a year.
i thought it was going to wittle away to nothing before it ever fell out.
he looks pretty cute, i think.
not looking forward to the big honkin grown up tooth that will replace it.
no we did not go to the creek.
that's our yard.
or was.
all that rain that hit alabama, hit us first...except it was stable when it was here.
no tornados, thankfully.
so sad for all those hurting families in AL right now. :(
anyhow, we had like a foot and a half of rain & flood conditions.
several families in our church had major flooding in their homes & lost a lot.
we had a nice layer of water in our detached garage.
thankfully most of the cardboard boxes that were out there were garage sale.
the only thing i was worried about was the old wicker bassinet that, at one time, held my niece, nephew, little sister, & all my babies.
thankfully it was in the one dry spot and aj was able to get it up off the floor before more rain came.
i took sawyer to get his hair cut today.
we went to a new place, pigtails and crewcuts.
it was awesome.
sawyer, who is not a fan of being messed with, actually tolerated this hair cut.
how could he not?
he had a flat screen in front of him playing toy story, he was riding an airplane & he had a cup of animal crackers.
tough life, kid.
they also have a play room, a train table, bubbles, suckers & and a prize box.
and yes, that is my 8 and 6 year old sitting in the kiddie cars.
the big boys have ONE more week of school! yay!!
so looking forward to a nice long break with my boys.
bring on summer!! Pin It

titus task fun run & 5K/my boys are superstuds
it was the perfect weather.
much better than last year, what with the mittens and stocking hats and all.
not too hot, not too cold. perfect.
it was on aj's birthday actually.
aj ran the 5K first.
he had been working on getting his time down.
there were fun activities for the kids to do while we waited.
it was very much family oriented.
and there was praise music.
yay.
it's always exciting to see aj coming to the finish line.
but this was more fun since it was a small race.
he won 1st in his age division. :)
after the 5K we all did the one mile fun run.
aj ran with avery, who was determined to win.
avery is number 664. do you see that determination on his face? :)
{sorry for that sub par picture quality, i got it from facebook}
i pushed sawyer in the stroller & chatted with friends.
finley ran ahead of me the entire time.
avery got 1st in his age division as well. :)
he. was. pumped.
when aj & avery saw finley coming, they ran back to him and ran with him across the finish line.
very sweet.
after the race the boys got their faces painted.
they love themselves a face paint.
they asked for razorbacks.
and that is what they got.
oh my.
then we walked down the street to the cutest little cafe ever and my camera battery died.
we ate lunch outside and it was lovely. Pin It
