one room school house field trip

this semester i have had the most fun reading little house in the big woods to finley for home school.
we both look forward to that sweet time together in the afternoons.
i practically grew up on little house on the prairie and i have always loved her books.

a few weeks ago we got to go back in time for a 2nd grade field trip to the one room schoolhouse.

it was so much fun.
all the kids dressed the part and they were adorable!!

we spent the day at the rocky branch one room schoolhouse and experienced a school day very much like laura ingalls might have.

we all got to learn about pumping water at the well, ringing the school bell to start school, and even outhouses!
we learned little tidbits about school in 1904 all throughout the day.

we all brought lunches that they may have carried in those times.
fin and i had a basket with sausage, cheese, biscuits, an apple, cookies and a jar of water. :)
i tied the food in fabric and twine or put it in jars...no ziplocks that day.
so fun!

after lunch they got to play outside with old fashioned toys.
that was everyone's favorite part. :)

it was so great to get a day with just my finley.

it was chilly in that school house. . . obviously there was no heat.
i was glad i brought along a quilt!

the teacher had the kids do a reading lesson, spelling lesson and math lesson.

they even had a spelling bee.

they also learned about punishments.
sweet little addie jo had to put her nose on the black board and fin had to wear a dunce hat!
pretty funny that my little mild mannered fin was the one in a dunce hat!

i love field trips and watching the kids learn something in such a tangible way.
it was the best field trip ever. :)

thrift store thursday

today has been a happy thursday.
i lined up with the other lunatics at the thrift store at 9 am to wait for the doors to open.
those shopping carts are a hot commodity.

thursdays are always a big day at the ph thrift because items that were marked half off go to 50 cents.
mostly i go because that's my only kidless morning.
that and the thrill of the hunt entices me. ;)

my two favorite purchases today....

set of 6 vintage glasses.
they have a date with the dishwasher and then off to the booth they go.
i know i've found a keeper when i have a hard time letting them go. :)

i've been looking for a good lamp base for our living room.
for $4.50, i decided this little number would fit the bill.
it had a date with the can of gloss gray spray paint.

i used frog tape to tape up the parts that i didn't want painted.

thankfully today is a perfectly sunny spring day to do some spray painting in the yard.
and p.s. i broke up with krylon.
i have learned through my years of painting not to cheap out on paint.
you definitely get what you pay for.
i use rust-oleum or valspar these days.
less coats, better coverage, etc.

she's currently drying in the sun.
i'll be sure to show you the after, asap. :)

have a great afternoon, y'all! :)

AJ found this for me a few weekends ago.

he is such a lover that little boy.

thrift store thursday

welp. good news, bad news.

bad news....the thrifting today was el lamo.
i didn't find anything.
such a sadness.

also, i went out yard saling, by myself, last saturday morning and the plan was to meet up with my fam at the soccer games with a car full of awesome loot.
notsomuch.

i hit a bunch of little, lamo yard sales and then finally got to a neighborhood sale.
i found a frame for $1, a big bulletin board for 50 cents and a lava lamp that avery had been wanting and gave me his own money for.

so not a great haul...but at least it wasn't a total loss.

then i was getting back in my car to find more sales and the car wouldn't start. at all.
sooo....i had to call aj, who had to rush the kids and soccer uniforms out the door to come to me....try to jump the car for 30 minutes unsuccessfully.
finally we left the car and went to soccer, dropped fin off at a birthday party, found another mom to bring him home, went to walmart for a battery and tools to change said battery and back to the car.
at this point aj got the privilege of fighting with the old rusted-in-place battery for 30 minutes in the pouring rain.
goooood times.

okay on to the good news.

the good news is this beautiful, perfectly chippy, yellow with turquoise peeking through, vintage metal rocker that i picked up on tuesday for . . . .  $4.99!!

yay. that's my kind of happy. :)

just the little bit of sunshine my front porch needed.

okay, your turn...have y'all found any thing fun this week?
