rest.

when i read the first line of Jesus Calling this morning, i laughed out loud.
it was and is just so perfect.

"Thank ME for the conditions that are requiring you to be still. . . Quietness and trust enhance your awareness of My presence with you.

i believe God is doing a refining work in us right now.
we are in a time of not knowing and waiting.
and . . . i am feeling at peace.....which i believe, is due in large part to the prayers of our friends.

my natural tendency is to work really hard and try to manipulate situations to make things happen.
i am choosing not to do that this time.
i am choosing to over and over again lay my worries, concerns, the future, at His feet.

i have been saying over and over "i cast this _____ at your feet" . . . whatever it is that i am worrying about at that particular moment.
and i am feeling God's peace.

i am learning to hear and recognize the Holy Spirit's voice.
i am learning again to trust.
one feeble, shaky step in front of the other.

God is so good.

pillowcase dress tutorial

happy valentine's day, friends!!

since today is the day of luuuuvvvv, i thought i'd show y'all some lovin' and with a tutorial.

so first of all, i know that there are many pillowcase dress tutorials out there.
but i thought i'd go ahead and share my simple, figure-it-out-as-i-go method in case y'all want to try it.
if you are a seamstress or a perfectionist, quit reading now.
this is by no means the right way to do this, this is just my own personal super easy, sara-version. :)
also, this is a super simple dress that you could even do with iron-on hem tape if you don't sew.

i made this sweet little dress for ruby for valentine's day.

i bought 1/2 of a yard of the red dotty fabric from hobby lobby and i already had the ribbon and fabric for the hearts.
i just eye balled how much fabric i'd need by holding it up to ruby in the store.

you can also take a dress that you have that is the right size and gauge your fabric that way.
or google pillowcase dress sizing.

first, i folded my piece of fabric in half width-wise and laid a dress of ruby's down to get an idea for the length of the dress.

next, i decided how long i wanted it to be, and added about 6 inches for seam allowance and the ribbon casing.  then i cut off the excess.

then, i trimmed up the top and bottom edges to make sure they were straight(ish).

next, i lined up the selvages.

i used the full width of the fabric for this dress {half for the front and half for the back} because i wanted it to be full when i gathered it up with the ribbon.

but if you want it more straight and less full, this is where you would trim some fabric from the width.
it does not have to be perfect, this dress is very forgiving.

next, {with the fabric still folded and right sides facing each other} i sewed a straight seam along that selvage edge, being sure not to leave any white edge showing.
i cut off the excess and sewed a zigzag stitch along that edge to keep it from fraying.

then, i folded the bottom edge up 1/4 of an inch {ish} and then up again and pinned it.
i sewed that edge to make the bottom hem.

next, the arm holes.
i folded the fabric in half again width wise.
i looked at my example dress to get an idea of the size for the arm holes.
then i measured across two inches and down four inches.
i made a little snip with my scissors to mark then spot first.

then, i made a curved, j-shaped cut for the armholes {you are cutting through 4 layers of fabric at this point}.
again, this does not have to be perfect.
just give it your best shot. :)

then, i unfolded the fabric and used some pink grosgrain ribbon that i had on hand to finish the edges of the arm holes.
the ribbon i had was 7/8 inch and i folded it in half over the edge and stitched it in place.

next, i made the ribbon casing.
i folded the top over 1/4 " and then another inch and stitched that down, close to the folded edge.

then, i took some more of that pink ribbon and cut two lengths that were each twice as long as the width of the dress.
i pinned one edge with a safety pin and worked it through the casing.  same with the other one.
then i stitched a little straight stitch in the middle to keep the ribbon from slipping out.

then, i just cinched up the ribbons to gather the top and tied them in bows on each side.
make sense?

to make the dress valentiney, i cut some scrap fabrics into heart shapes and stitched them on.
i left the edges raw because i like the look of the frayed fabric edge.
i purposefully sewed it around and around and kind of wonky. :)

this was a really simple and inexpensive dress to make....and i love how it turned out.

ruby received many compliments on sunday. :)

our little valentine. :)

so i know this tutorial was very basic.
i wanted to make sure even non-sewers could do it.

let me know if you have any questions.
i'm thinking of making a modified version for me. :)

teacher gifts

our kids valentine's parties are today so i had to get these done this week.
but if you need a gift to give next tuesday, you know, on valentines, you can grab the ingredients this weekend and have this ready to go.

i have been inspired by crystal to love on our teachers a bit more.
she's always baking up something and wrapping it all cute to bless her son's teachers.
i love the spurring one another on that happens in the blog world.

anyhow, this gift is a combo of her apple and caramel dip gift idea with tags from eighteen25 (free download).

glass jars would have been cuter....but you know, i was using what i had.
this dip is amazing....it's just a tub of caramel apple dip from the produce section blended with a block of cream cheese.
easy but so yum.
packaged up with a granny smith...it's pretty darn adorable.
i wrote a little message to the teachers on the back of the tag.

just a little something to bless those who bless us.  :)

happy friday friends!

valentimes

that's what dog the bounty hunter calls valentine's. and i like dog.
i miss him now that we don't have cable. sad times.
moving on....

so i mentioned yesterday that i want to make some crafty valentines for the boys to give out.

i've been looking around on the internets and i'd thought i'd share some of my favorite ideas.

my boys' parties are this week which is why i'm figuring this stuff out now.
you know i don't plan ahead.

so for teacher gifts, i'm thinking i'm going to do this caramel dip & apple idea from little bit funky.

it looks pretty easy and cute.
and this is something i know i would have enjoyed when i was a teacher {for those two whole years}.

i like these tags from eighteen 25 to make them valentiney.

i love these superhero valentines for my big boys to pass out.
they're cute and crafty but still easy and boyish.
they're also from little bit funky and my girl sara, from a life less ordinary.

okay, how adorable are these for little ones?
so cute...teddy grahams and gummy bears. precious.

and one last idea....

cute and simple....just the way i like things.

what are y'all doing for the day of luuuvvvv?
homemade cards? treats? store bought box o' cards?
please share. :)

tuesday stream of consciousness

good morning.
happy tuesday.

just checking in to say hi.

just going along in our little world over here.

life.
kids.
basketball practices.
piano lessons.
errands.
chores.
enjoying our friends.

just normal life going on.

ruby was dedicated at our church on sunday.
our friends and family gathered around us and agreed in prayer for her life.
precious.

we had some friends over for super bowl on sunday night.
of course i didn't watch one second of the game.
i watched a couple of commercials but mostly talked and ate.

i made pioneer woman's wing's.....as i do every super bowl.
they are so good and so bad.
we had a bunch of yummy snacky food and the kids ran in and out and all around.
aj had the fireplace going so hot that we had to open the windows.
fun night.

good news: ruby is rolling a bunch now.
bad news: she keeps rolling over to her stomach in her bed and then gets mad because she's on her face and is too tired to turn back over.

i'm going to a PTA meeting today.
isn't that such a mom-ish thing to do?
i'm really feeling like a mom lately. . . even though i've been a mom for 9 years.
it's hard to explain...i guess i'm just feeling older.

we're looking for a house to buy.
we're praying a lot.
trusting the Lord.

valentine's day parties are coming up....i really want to make something super cute and crafty for the boys to pass out.
but i will probably end up just picking out some lame pre-packaged deal and the boys will be happier for it.
i also want to make something sweet for their teachers.
and something fun for ruby to wear.
we'll see what i get done....

okay hope you all followed this crazy randomness.

thanks for reading. :)

p.s. i'm going to make another vlog this week.

instafriday yo.

hey there.
so happy for another friday to roll around.
this has been a long week so i'm happy to close the curtain on it.
sometimes you just need to start over, right?

a few random snapshots of the past week . . .

last weekend we went to the lake to celebrate a dear friend's 30th birthday.
it was wonderful and carefree and fun.
driving through arkansas is beautiful....love the hills of the ozarks.

sunday afternoons are often spent cleaning before my potter's house girls roll in.
a little raspberry tea and chocolate take the edge off.
p.s. have you tried that chocolate? you should. lindt knows what they're doing.

on monday, the littles and i loaded up and walked to the elementary school to eat lunch with finley.
ruby was a big hit with the first graders. :)
i think fin was really excited to show her off.
a little girl at his table kept stroking her cheek...so precious.

our dryer quit drying last week.
i was telling my bible memory girls about my laundry with no dryer woes and my sweet servant of a friend followed me home and commandeered my laundry.
she brought it back a few hours later all clean and perfectly folded.
what a sweet, sweet blessing.
i want to be like her. i have a looonnnnng way to go.

spray painting is my kind of therapy.
thankful and happy for nice weather to get to do it.

my sweet little finley has come so far in his reading this year!
it's been really exciting to see.
i love hearing him read to me.  :)

okay friends...that's it for me.
check out some more instafun at liferearranged.

life rearranged

happy weekend to you all.
